24 Jun 2010Moving from ActionScript 2 to ActionScript 3 forces us developers to change some of the habits we have been practicing for quite some time.
Actionscript 3 actually contains two XML related classes, XML and XMLDocument. From a high level you can look at it like this: XML is XML that is parsed using E4X (new to AS3 XML Text).
E4X is essentially a whole new language which is part of the AS3 grammar, just as regular expressions have their own completely different language but exist within ActionScript 3.0. And being so new, there really isn’t a whole lot of documentation out there. This is further complicated by the fact that since E4X seems simple enough at first glance to explain in a few lines, a lot of documentation stops short.

The question that begs to be answered is why use AS3 XML Text. Flash 5 was extended to allow XML to be used as an external data source. This gives you as a designer a great edge. XML takes care of the content and Flash manages the presentation. With this combination you can create a template SWF file that is populated by an external XML document. Why is this good? The end result is that you only need to update the XML document to change the content of the movie. No need to open the Flash movie.
Flash MX uses much the same objects and methods to control XML files. So what is the difference between 5 and MX? You are very unlikely to come close to this trying to run your own server. Your uptime will be based on the uptime of your internet service provider. It is certainly within the realm of a fairly technically savvy person to setup and administer their own web server on the internet, but it takes some work, and any claims that it is easy to do should be met with guarded skepticism. This advice is coming to you from someone that ran their own web server on the internet for almost two years.
On the other hand it is pretty easy to (relatively speaking) setup and run a web server against your localhost (127.0.0.1) address. This web server will only be available to you local PC, but can serve as the test platform for your web site.
Some direction on running your own web server
Well, if you have read the last section and are still reading then you are looking for some direction. I am going to be offering information from the perspective that you are somewhat familiar already with the terms I am throwing about. The links I have provided here will go into more detail. Again, setting up and maintaining your own web server is not easy and requires a broad range of technical knowledge.
I will be showing you how to setup the Apache web server on your PC running under Windows. I am running Windows XP – Professional. You can run a web server using Windows XP – Home or Windows 2000. I mention this as any specific guidance I am giving you might vary if you are using something other than XP Professional. Also, I have not tried doing this on any other version of Windows.
Getting the software
You can go directly to Apache and get the webserver. But, what if you want to add blog software, forum software, Php, and other packages that do not come standard with the web server itself? Like I said this stuff is not easy. But wait, I am about to turn you on to one of the most comprehensive web packages available. This web package could probably be installed by your Grandmother without difficulty! All you need to do is download the file (it is a huge 186mb file). Once you download it installation is so simple it is ridiculous. The folks that did this are just brilliant. Most software shops could take a lesson from them in installation and configuration management.
This software comes bundled with blog software, forum software, MySQL database, apache security module and much more. The price is right as well. This site is not really easy to find in the search engines which goes to show that sometimes some of the best stuff on the web is buried quite deep. The url is http://www.devside.net/
Figuring out if IIS (Internet Information Server) is enabled?
I am assuming that you are going to install and use Apache as your web server. As such you need to see if IIS is running on your machine as there might be a port conflict as port 80 is the default port.
Some misc. advice (You may likely need to do a bit more digging to deal with the advice given here.)
Setting up your router
- DO NOT open up your entire DMZ to the internet are you will be toast!!!
- Only open up port 80 and port 23 (if you plan on letting people download stuff using FTP. Note, they can download files using http which runs on port 80).
Port Forwarding
- Find a service like ZoneEdit. This is what I use. It is free for low to medium traffic sites.
Your ISP
- Some ISP’s block port 80. You can still run your webserver, but it will have to be done on another port (81, 82, etc…)
- Some ISP’s have policies that do not allow their customers to run websites. You should read your internet service agreement for details.

4. Small file size. CSS will reduce the file size of your html document. If you look at a web page that is designed with CSS you will notice that the size is very small compared to one designed with lots of tables. This also helps reduce load times.
5. Reduce clutter. CSS allows you to get rid of a lot of extraneous html code therefore making your site code neater and cleaner. This makes it easy to alter the code if you need to make edits.
6. Eliminate javascript. Many people surf the web with javascript turned off because they don’t want to be vulnerable to viruses or allow pop-ups. This means that the beautiful javascript navigation you produced will not
be seen. You can often achieve the same affect with CSS navigation. These allow for rollovers and other pretty affects and are much more user friendly.
7. Accessibility. If you use CSS2’s aural properties it provides information to non-sighted users and voice-browser users. The CSS2 “media types” (used with @media rules) allow authors and users to design style sheets that will cause documents to render more appropriately for certain devices such as braille devices, speech synthesizers, or tty (text telephone) devices.
8. Save time. CSS will allow you to design your site much faster than tables because there are some styles you can use for every site. I store “often used” CSS snippets in a special file where I can easily access them for any site I design.
9. Save money. CSS will shorten the project development process and eliminate design obstacles that occur from using tables. If designing many web sites you will be able to use the same style sheets or just make a few modifications to them. You will still charge for the design project but it won’t take as long as when using tables thus making you more money in a shorter time period.
10. Flexibility of design. You can use pixel precision in your web site designs. By adjusting the margins and padding of the CSS you can easily adjust the position of your content. You can also create very modern designs that can’t be duplicated with tables. For example you can use a background image for a header then place your content over it using the H1 tag for better page optimization.
